The Cholmondeley Ladies circa 1600-10

Another painting we enjoyed at the Tate Britain on Tuesday. These two sisters were born on the same day, married on the same day and had their first baby on the same day. You can't see but although they look identical the design of their dresses, the patterns on the babies clothes, and their eye color are different from the other. Very clever. An example of what you don't expect to see when going through staid British art museums.

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose  1885-6 by John Singer Sargent

We love Sargent and had to stop by to see the dozen or so Sargent paintings at the Tate. This painting in person is luminous, a genuine glow emerging from those Japanese lanterns.  The atmosphere really is dim and the lanterns really do glow.  A wonder to see in person.
